Description
My work is about the love of paint and color: the rich goo of oils, and the iconic emotive and descriptive powers of color. I love the sensual surface these elements can create together. In pursuit of these qualities I have explored a number of stylistic genres and directions over a lifetime, and I prefer the power of abstract or semi-abstract compositions in the opaque mediums. For many years I have been drawn to the “primitive” or naive styles, despite my education and conventional background. In a complex and ever changing art world, I have always felt the authority and boldness of this approach, the childlike celebration of simplicity and the flouting of conventional respect for representational drawing and renaissance spatial concepts. I seem drawn to swim against the current tides.
So my paintings are frequently landscapes with evocative colors and strong but simple compositions that seek to find the spirit of some other place – real or imagined. They may employ unusual spatial concepts in search of originality and compositional power. They almost always use abstract space, refusing to surrender the surface. And they try not to take themselves too seriously. I'd like them to exude some occasional humor and unconventionality. I would like them to be bold and sensuous, and sometimes amusing.
Dressed in this less pretentious style, I can make a philosophical statement or observation on life or on a place, softened a bit by whimsy. Essentially, they are all about “change” - change from conventional perspectives to something else; change from conventional perceptions to something other; change from conventional persuasions to something more.
