The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a conspicuous and large hawk, with a length of about 19 inches and a weight of about 2.4 pounds. Their range includes the entire United States. They show lots of geographic variation in their feather colors. Most of their hunting of small mammals and snakes is either from a perch or while kiting. While the adults have the distinctive red tail, the juveniles do not. This fledgling Red-Tailed Hawk, with its nest in an evergreen overlooking a beach, was laying on the beach with wings extended. While I've not seen this behavior by a Hawk either before or since this episode, "dust bathing" is a means by which a variety of bird species including hawks clean their plumage.
