SUNRISE AT COAL MINE CANYON by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Coal Mine Canyon is a beautiful canyon that takes on a magnificent glow during sunrise and sunset. It is known to the Navajos as haahonooji, meaning "jagged." The Mormons began to mine coal here in the late 1800's to heat their new homes in nearby Tuba City, Arizona. After the Bureau of Indian Affairs built the Tuba City boarding school, the coal mine was reopened around 1908 to fuel the steam generators to heat the complex. Because of the poor quality of the coal, it was never mined commercially, saving this beautiful canyon from the removal of more than eight feel of coal. Although smaller than the Grand Canyon, many believe Coal Mine Canyon rivals the Grand Canyon in beauty.
