Description
Sunset on the Platte River, Saturday evening, March 20, 2021. The annual sandhill crane migration comes through central Nebraska each year early March through mid-April. Each year between 300,000-500,000 cranes arrive along an 80-mile section of the Platte River in mid-Nebraska, most settle in from Kearney to Grand Island.
Usually the best place to view the cranes right along the river is in one of the public blinds. However, because of Covid those blinds were closed to the public. I arrived several miles from Rowe Sanctuary, where a large portion of the migration settle in. From my vantage point, we could see cranes arriving as the sun set, but most of the incoming cranes were miles from our spot. A lesser group arrived around 8pm and settled in 350-400 yards away.
(Next year, I hope the blinds are open!)
