One evening I climbed a rough, rocky hillside above my family's log cabin in the foothills of Wyoming's Snowy Range. Just on the other side of the hilltop, I sat among boulders with my oil-sketching box, and as the sun lowered I worked quickly to catch the colors, light and shadows as they played over the huge landscape before me. A few nighthawks skimmed here and there, and in the clear air I could hear the snort of a pronghorn, the lowing of cattle in the far distance, and the cry of a red-tailed hawk. When dusk fell, I wended carefully back down the deer trails home, while the hoots of great horned owls rose from the nearby draw. On following days, I worked with the rough sketch in the studio, and also went back to study the site in more detail. This painting is the result of my efforts, and I hope you enjoy looking at it half as much as I enjoyed creating it! The original is available, framed.

I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
