I find so many things in your work that I love most about great art and artists - this is one of those works of yours that makes my spirit and imagination sing with joy. Your works deserve the highest honor and appreciation and I admire everything you've painted!

Joyce Owens replied:

Katherine: I wish the comments were dated...thanks so much for your lovely words!

Sensational painting my friend,..filled with emotion - very fine work. All the best to you Joyce! . ......Joe

There is something immediately striking about this portrait. She has a defiant look about her, in that no matter what she and her family endured, her spirit remains unbroken. I particularly like the way you incorporate the cool pinks and warm oranges and reds in her face, which gives even more complexity to her character.

Wonderful powerful portrait.

There is real power to this portrait. Wonderful work!

Incredible vibrancy of color and character. These are strong and proud people you portrayed.

Awesome product. Got it in today and hung it up. Was a bit cautious having it shipped especially through UPS but it was packed super well and came in perfect condition even though UPS always beats up my boxes. Definitely will be lifelong decor considering the quality of the maple it is printed on. Would certainly recommend to anyone thinking of purchasing this.

This is a birthday present for my brother. And this is the first time I've ordered from this website. Let's get the party started.

I love the piece so much! How well it works in my whimsical blue garden! I just did not know to depict the rabbit hole in the Alice in Wonderland area that this is the perfect conceptual representation. It is beautiful and whimsical. As I had to place it on a stump where a branch had been sawed, I hired a one skilled with a jigsaw to round the edges a bit for visual believability and, after attaching it to the stump, added tiny pieces of bark around the edge to help it blend with the stump. Great discovery!

Artist's Description

I see red when I consider the deprivation my enslaved ancestors suffered and the residual effects we can see today. In these portraits I highlight the brilliant strength in these survivors of a shameful national past. Racial discrimination, an enduring national phenomenon, is a continuing concern for me in my life and my life’s work. For four years I have also focused on a specific American injustice, slavery. I seek neither revenge nor pity. I want you to look at these victims in the light of their achievements despite the beatings, the starvation, the horrific working conditions, the loss of family, the denial of education and the inability to accumulate property and wealth. These images of Survivor Spirits exist in the golden light of their glowing inner strength as beacons of hope and examples of endurance to us all. The progeny of African slaves can be proud to be the red-blooded proof that the slaves were able to survive against all attempts to annihilate them.
