Joyce, I hope to one day see your fine set of paintings in the National Gallery. What a superb record you have made for future generations.

Joyce Owens replied:

Dear Kevin! From your lips...When an artist with your eye says so, it is a thrill for me! Thanks Kevin!!!!

Joyce, Even though I was not a part of it, I feel horrible still about the way my ancestors committed such atrocious acts. The histoy of slavery in our country is so appalling. I admire so much the strength, endurance, faith and tenacity of the slaves and the generations after... I am glad that you are showing the spirit of the generations in such a magnaminous, artistic way.

Joyce Owens replied:

Anne-Elizabeth, thank you so much for your important gesture. History is history, and done; how we may see ourselves is a reflection of that history. So instead of being ashamed of something we could not help, we should accept that reality and build a better today and future. I really appreciate you. (I wish FAIA would date comments!)

Very happy with my purchase, thank you.

I love the piece so much! How well it works in my whimsical blue garden! I just did not know to depict the rabbit hole in the Alice in Wonderland area that this is the perfect conceptual representation. It is beautiful and whimsical. As I had to place it on a stump where a branch had been sawed, I hired a one skilled with a jigsaw to round the edges a bit for visual believability and, after attaching it to the stump, added tiny pieces of bark around the edge to help it blend with the stump. Great discovery!

Somebody shares an image of this with me on august 2nd. I did some research and found this one for sale and bought the version printed on Wood!! I love it! In fact my Abyssinian Fabia loves it too!! She gets up on my dresser and paws the face of this beauty gently!! No claws out thank gosh!! I though it was neat that she found beauty in it as I did! Thanks for having such a fabulous imagination!!

Artist's Description

I want you to look at these victims in the light of their achievements despite the beatings, the starvation, the horrific working conditions, the loss of family, the denial of education and the inability to accumulate property and wealth. These images of Survivor Spirits exist in the golden light of their glowing inner strength as beacons of hope and examples of endurance to us all. The progeny of African slaves can be proud to be the red-blooded proof that the slaves were able to survive against all attempts to annihilate them.
