Description
A large, two-tailed swallowtail butterfly (Papilio multicaudata) rests on and sips nectar from an orange and yellow striped flower (Zinnia elegans). The background is the softly blurred green glass of the yard beyond the garden. The sunlight passing through the insect's translucent wings give them the appearance of stained glass. Arizona selected this butterfly, also called the double tailed or two-tailed tiger swallowtail, as its official state butterfly in 2001.
