Coral reefs, sometimes called the rain forests of the sea, are the most diverse of all marine ecosystems.
As many as 25% of all ocean species depend on reefs for food and shelter, yet they cover less than two percent of the ocean bottom.
Because they are so diverse, coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea. They provide us with food, shoreline protection, jobs based on tourism and medicines.
Overfishing and destructive fishing, pollution, global warming, changing ocean chemistry and invasive species are taking a huge toll, and reefs are rapidly disappearing. So I painted one to highlight the problem.
