This local hang gliding retrieval spot just south of the Byron Bay lighthouse, Tallows beach is also a good spot to watch dolphins and other sea mammals, away from the more crowded beaches to its north. I worked on this large format composition in a minimal way, trying to retrieve only the essence of the location. Light colors of titanium white, cobalt, and a cool cadmium justified this early winter scene in which the slightly overcast sky kept conditions fairly constant, allowing me to resolve the painting with a pleasant envelope of light. Grasses which grew in abundance throughout the white beach sand provided a textured foreground which I could anchor the composition with.
A minimal treatment such as this was a way that large format works were treated by earlier impressionist painters in France, but it is also practical and very useful.
