Description
I never saw his face, it was always night time when I found him, either in front of Kansas Lumber or over at the train depot in Coffeyville, Kansas. He was an icon in the history of Coffeyville, selling his tamales from a little cart downtown in the early 1950's. I would see him in the shadows as I rode my bike in the late evening...never stopped to visit with him or to buy one of his five cent tamales. He must have been successful, he was out there many times. I wanted to paint the darkness I remembered, but decided to make it earlier in the evening, the sun is setting off to the west. That's the grain elevator in the background. The train depot was a beautiful historical building, now a paved street where it once stood.
