This bird walks slowly and sometimes rocking its body back and forth, stepping heavily with its front foot. This is classic behavior for Woodcocks and is intended to make worms move around in the soil, increasing the birds ability to find them.

Although technically a shorebird (sandpiper family), the American Woodcock lives in forests and old fields. Its camouflage like plumage and low profile make it hard to find. Unlike many other birds, its large eyes are positioned high and near the back of their skull (close to having eyes in the back of your head). This arrangement lets them keep watch for danger in the sky while they have their heads down probing in the soil for food. They locate their prey (earthworms etc.) by hearing, and feeling vibrations through their flexible bill tip
