The Art Lesson by Avonelle Kelsey (1931-2009) is a still life painting, likely created as a classroom demo, but still lovely in its unique simplicity. The West Virginia born Kelsey was a prolific artist, author, teacher, gallery owner and all around creative force for over 50+ years. Over the years she had galleries in South Dakota's Black Hills and various locations around San Diego County. Her paintings is particular are now spread throughout the world.
This painting is one of over 60 rediscovered in Oct 2013 by Avonelle's daughter Nola Lee Kelsey. Kelsey (Avonelle) was best known for her large, dynamic acrylic artwork. After her death from breast cancer in 2009 some of her older watercolors and small classroom demos were hastily placed into a portfolio that already contained some very old works by the artist. Only recently was the portfolio pulled from storage just long enough to photo document this wide mix of old and new artwork inside. Most has been rarely seen.
