Love it!!!
This painting is a result of my 2012 holiday in central Australia, the prime purpose being to get material and inspiration for art. The Breakaways are a fascinating area about 20kms (6 miles) north of Coober Pedy in South Australia. They are an ancient geological formation originally formed under the sea and the various landforms are absolutely incredible colours. It makes one wonder how there could be such different colours in adjacent landforms.
It is framed - the frame is 9.5 ins x 9.5 ins x 1.5ins, black with a white mount and interior black frame so it sets off the painting really well. Because of the white mount, it is under glass. It can be removed from the frame for postage if desired.
I had been framing for my wife, Ekaterina Mortensen, and then at the start of 2008 decided I should do some paintings to put in the frames myself. Having told Katya for years that if ever I paint I would paint with a large brush on large canvases, I started with small ones - miniatures. My earliest miniatures picked up a Highly Commended in the Royal National Canberra Art Show in 2008, followed by a Second Prize (miniatures) in 2009, 2nd Prize in Goulburn Workers Club Annual Art Prize acrylics section in 2024. I have had works hanging at The Artists Shed in Queanbeyan, the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney - including a joint exhibition with my wife - and the Rotary Camberwell Exhibition in Melbourne, Royal Canberra Show, Sydney...

Alex Mortensen replied:
Thanks, Jim. I'm glad to hear that photography has been a valuable activity for you. It's certainly a very enjoyable thing to do and I can see you get a lot out of your local area. You'd love an area such as the Breakaways near Coober Pedy in Australia. If you are on Facebook, have a look at Derek Malouf;s posts. Almost every day he adds photos of skies and things he sees on his frequent walks around Goulburn NSW and elsewhere. I'm sure you'll like them. Best of luck!
