Awesome. You have perfectly captured the drudgery of the working coal mine. It reminds me of a Welsh story that I think was titled the "Littlest Pony."

Jeffrey Koss replied:

Charles Thank you for your nice comments

Awesome!!! I lot of my uncles worked in mines!!!! V/F

Jeffrey Koss replied:

They must be good guys Thank you Cheryl

Shades of yesteryear for me! My daddy was a coal miner in So. IL. Dad told many stories about those mules being so stubborn ... BUT they could sense danger a mile away. Miners always paid attention to the reactions of the mules. Super image!

Jeffrey Koss replied:

I think the Mules got Black lung too but nobody cared .Thank you for your nice comments

Thank you very much Chrisann

I just love this depiction of the coal miners. Tells a great story...v/f

Jeffrey Koss replied:

From a old coal miner thank you. Sharon

What a strong and compelling expression of an experience few of us have lived or can imagine. The colors, composition, and style converge to create a mood of dread and danger. I'm amazed you could get a mule to go in at all!

Jeffrey Koss replied:

Thank you very much Dawn coal mining was and still is the most dangerous job .It was how high the coal seam was if they used a donkey or a mule.

Great painting, good story. I can't imagine taking a Mule into close quarters in the half light, no place to go if /when they act up. f/v

Jeffrey Koss replied:

Thank you Cori,Glad the old days are behind us.Sometimes the animals were treated better than the men.

Thank you for the feature in Heroes and Heroines

Jeffrey-Great depiction , great artwork, it really tells a story. Not only is the work dangerous, now you add another unknown element of a beast of burden known for its stubborness. It looks like the mule may be taking aim to punt the miner down the shaft..Thanks for your comments on my artwork...Jack

Jeffrey Koss replied:

Jack Always good to hear from you your art work is great and thanks again.Jeffrey

Very nice painting Jeffrey, Do you miss going down? thank you

Jeffrey Koss replied:

Thank you Len I don't miss it.

Great art work, Jeffrey! It was hard work for both, the people and the mules!

Jeffrey Koss replied:

It is beautiful to look at every day. Love the colors.

3 stars the cover, 1 Star for the rubbery filling which I threw away, no stars for the packaging, so horrible that it puts a real damper on the purchase

Good pillow cover, rubbery pillow insert which I threw away, it would be nice to have a nicer package when it arrives, it makes you think that it is junk, not a good start, and a damper on your purchase. 4 Star for the cushion shell, 1 Star for the rubbery insert, no star for the crummy little packaging. It ruins the entire experience.

Artist's Description

Both my Grandfathers my father and myself worked in the coal mines in Western Pa. Taking a mule in the mine was dangerous work you never knew what they would do and if they didn't like you they wouldn't move.Painting by Jeffrey Koss

About Jeffrey Koss

As a self taught artist my work are on display at Mt. Aloysius College at the Wolf Kuhn Art Galley till May 4 2018. I'm a retired coal miner...fell in love with painting in January 2010. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be painting. I worked 23 1/2 years in the mines...went down 1,000 feet then we would drive 8 miles to where we worked. I like the clean life of the outdoors and nature. Thank you very much.Jefffrey.
