The Colored Musicians Club is beloved in Buffalo by people of all backgrounds because it speaks so eloquently of our town's musical history. Years ago there were separate musicians' unions for black and white musicians, and this cool old brick building on Michigan Street was the headquarters of the black musicians' union. Count Basie and Duke Ellington jammed here. They and other visiting masters would come here after their gigs. The club now is home to a wonderful little jazz museum, and under normal circumstances there is live music here most nights of the week.
Mary Kunz Goldman is known for her work for The Buffalo News -- first as comics editor, then as columnist, reporter, and music critic. For over 20 years she wrote a column called the Buzz, about goings-on around Buffalo. She also wrote a popular weekly feature titled “100 Things Every Western New Yorker Should Do At Least Once.” Her writing about Buffalo inspired her to start drawing. For the last year Mary has been sketching our town -- from life, on location, in ink. She has made it her goal to create 7 sketches a week throughout 2020. Mary is a lifelong resident of Buffalo, N.Y.. She attended Christ the King School and the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart.
