Description
Marvellously informal portrait by French painter and printmaker Paul Albert Besnard (1849-1934), thought to be of the actress Gabrielle Rejane, at the Comedie Francaise in Paris. Besnard was an academic painter until around 1880, when he 'saw the light (so to speak)' and switched to Impressionism, although the influence of the likes of Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds - who he had studied in London - remained with him throughout his career.
