The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a very large owl with a wing span of about 52 inches and a weight of about 4 pounds. They typically breed in the Arctic and Taiga, but have been venturing further south in winter to the northern United States. Snowy Owls are found on barrier beaches, airport fields, marshes and farmlands, and feed on rodents, small animals, ducks and gulls. The first year males and females have dense bars on their chest, while the adult females have lighter bars and the adult males are essentially all white. They are mainly nocturnal, but have also been seen hunting during the day as I've previously observed.
This young Snowy Owl with a coy gesture while preening itself on a snow-covered beach, was photographed in Stratford, Connecticut on 12-10-2017. The light was soft, being about 40 minutes after sunrise. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR lens to capture this image.
