It is a sunny afternoon in a high, alpine place, and the blue, blue waters of a clear lake reflect the color of the sky above.
The Divide invites the viewer to step into a place of adventure, silence, quiet, and peace. High up in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, The Divide is a place of majestic beauty where a person can stop and listen to the silence, far away from the sounds of the city and its urban noise.
There are many places like The Divide in the Pacific Northwest, but though there are many, this does not mean that they are easy to find or access. Frequently, to encounter a view of the mountains such as this, embracing a lake of pristine cleanness and beauty, the hiker needs to do just that – to hike up winding, narrow trails that work their way up and up through the rocks and crags, further up and further in.
When one first starts out, it doesn’t seem like the journey will be long – and in a way, it isn’t, because the view on the way up, while more enclosed and less glorious than the view at the end, is still a vista of beauty and peace. Step after step the hiker, the adventurer, takes in this beauty and peace, and with every rest stop one looks down the trail that one has come, and bit by bit, the hiker climbs higher and closer to the goal.
At the end, as the goal is closer, the trail turns steeper, rockier, more difficult but not impossible to climb, and in that last scrabble that seems like it will take forever, the hiker keeps in mind the final goal: that kingdom of refuge that is found only when the hiker perseveres to the end. And so, he she enters The Divide, where the high altitude sun is warm, the cool breeze is sharp but clear, and the lake is a mirror of deep, still blue.
The Divide is featured on 41 Fine America groups.
