Description
The dome of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT, at bottom right), silhouetted against star trails. CFHT became operative in 1979 and is situated on the top (4200m) of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The main mirror has a diameter of 3.6m and observations are made in the optical and near infrared wavelengths. Mauna Kea is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observations and hosts many other major telescopes. The brightest trail at top left is the Polaris star.
