I was walking along on a country road in Southwestern Michigan last November and came upon this stately, elderly lady. She told me that she had seen a lot. She had seen wars and presidents; she had seen good times and bad. She heard songs that stayed with her and many more that she would like to forget. She had seen children born. She had seen them grow from real beauty to the more superficial kind. She had known their sorrows and their joys. And in the end, she buried them and she lives on. She holds these memories and more that are made each day from her cellar to her attic; from her front door to her back she holds loves and fears and quiet moments of inspiration. She is that old place, the Duchess.
