Description
The Historic Village at Allaire in Monmouth County, NJ, was once home to the Howell Iron Works and was owned by James Allaire. Howell was a bustling village that employed 400-600 people. There were four furnaces, a casting shed, an on-site screw factory, a general store and multiple trade shops. Peak years of the Howell Iron Works were from 1822 to 1836. Eventually the iron works fell into bankruptcy during the 1940's. James Allaire was committed to implementing new technology as seen by the Enameling Building. This building housed a furnace which backed an enamel finish onto hollowware in an experimental process.
