Photograph of the statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo erected on Point Loma in San Diego at the Cabrillo National Monument. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo captained the Spanish Galleon San Salvador, and was the first explorer to sail coast of California and Channel Islands. He is celebrated throughout the state of California for his discoveries with monuments, parks, schools, lighthouses, and more named after him. There is even an annual festival in San Diego each year in September to celebrate the day he first set foot on California land.
