Moneyed Parisian fine artist, cycling champion and auto racer, Henri Farman, was in the unique position to purchase a biplane from aeronautical engineer and manufacturer, Gabriel Voisin.
On the 13th of January, 1908, Farman became the first person ever to cover a circular distance of one kilometer at the French, claiming a substantial 50,000 franc prize. (Roughly 1.2 million dollars today).
After a string of record-breaking flights, Farman, along with brothers Richard and Maurice, built a highly successful and innovative aircraft manufacturing plant. Their 1914 model aircraft was used for extensive artillery observation and reconnaissance during World War 1.
Farman’s contributions to aviation were substantial. He died in Paris at age 84.
