Dawn's horses go berserk when the first snowstorm of the autumn blows in on the wind, half-hiding the mountain peaks and buffetting the migrating hawk. Dawn sketched this in her journal after spending most of a day hiking the ridges, ravines and sagebrush prairie looking for her horses. She needed to bring them in to the corral for the farrier, but she couldn't find them for hours, and then when she finally did they were so wild they terrified her -- they wouldn't hurt her on purpose, but she feared an accidental kick. If that red sorrel foxtrotter, Paycheck, were rearing anywhere near you, you'd be scared, too -- standing upright he's 10 feet or more tall! With speed and power to match. Dawn yelled at the horses, but they didn't hear for craziness and the howling wind. But Candy (the orange sorrel in front of Paycheck), who is Dawn's true equine soul-mate, seemed to sense Dawn's plight and came to her rescue. I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
