The Flower Girl by artist Avonelle Kelsey (1931-2009) is a pastel drawing on paper. The young girl with flowers in her hair appears to be a portrait of Avonelles granddaughter Athena. The work may likely be based on a family photo of the child. However Avonelles grandchildren would occasionally be used as models for her art classes at Oceanside Senior Center in California, where the artist taught several art, ceramic and creative writing classes for Mira Costa Community College.
The West Virginia born Kelsey was a prolific artist, author, teacher, gallery owner and all around creative force for over 50+ years. Over the years she had galleries in South Dakotas Black Hills and various locations around San Diego County. Her paintings is particular are now spread throughout the world.
