The concept of the Four Directions is inherent in the spirituality of most native culture in North America. This place was sacred long before there was a written history of it. There are petroglyphs that are thousands of years old. There are stories told from father to son, from mother to daughter throughout the long epoch of the Dine people who still occupy this place. It is a timeless place known to those who have been there as Tseyi which means a place within the rock. The name was corrupted by the conquistadores to Canyon de Chelly and that is how it is known today by the outside world. Tseyi to me, epitomizes the idea of the Four Directions.
