Description
The Four Sisters at Stone Mountain, 06/2015
11x15 watercolor on 140# Arches cold pressed watercolor paper
One of the first dates (Do people who are pushing fifty have dates?) my wife and I ever went on was a hike around the Stone Mountain Loop Trail, before the rubber padded safety weenies ruined the trail, on her birthday. (I guess that means only one of us was still pushing fifty on that hike, but I digress) We hiked the loop enjoying wonderful fall colors and made the side trip up and down the steps to the Upper Falls. Eventually the hike inspired a large watercolor that I call Birthday Girl. Dont look for it on the website, I would have to remove it from its frame and have a flatbed scan made for that. And, anyhow, theres something special about a painting that you only want to share with a certain person. But, we both enjoy looking at that glorious Fall Moment frozen in time everyday.
So, here is another Stone Mountain watercolor. This began as a quarter sheet with the lines of sketched out so I could see if Cobalt Blue would be the right color for my sky, I think that was last Thursday. I put some clean water in my bins, misted the pans on my road palette, and then, with a largish round brush I set my blue pigment charging in the road palettes lid.
As soon as my loaded brush hit the paper I realized that I had mixed a puddle of Cerulean, not Cobalt Blue. I corrected this on my half-sheet which I consider my serious piece anyhow. After all, I was only using the quarter-sheet as a practice piece. (That one needs a number.)
As I kept practicing on my quarter-sheet to work out the colors for my trees, rocks and stone faces I became more and more emotionally involved with the effort. Except for the Cerulean Carolina Blue sky, there are only four colors in this watercolor. Sometimes less can be so much more!!
Now I need to get back to work on my serious piece Stone Mountain - the four sisters. (That will be a half-sheet and I hope it will be as fresh as this watercolor.) Ive decided to call this watercolor The Four Sisters at Stone Mountain. It takes so little to amuse me!
May and June have been very good months for sketching and painting!
The serious draft of this subject is "The Four Sisters." It seems to get very few views. So, if you like this draft, be sure to check out the final draft, "The Four Sisters." Thank you - JD.
