The Gardner-Pingree House was build in Salem Massachusetts in 1804 by Samuel McIntire in a Federal style for John and Sarah (West) Gardner. The house was sold, in 1814, to Capt. Joseph White. David Pingree bought the house in 1834.[3] In 1933 descendants of David Pingree gave the house to the Essex Institute, which merged with the Peabody Museum of Salem to form the Peabody Essex Museum.
The house was the site of the notorious 1830 murder of Capt. Joseph White, whose death prompted a famous trial prosecuted by Daniel Webster. The trial inspired Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The house is now owned by the Peabody Essex Museum as part of its architectural collection, and is open to the public for guided tours.
