The Greats, Birds that Is...

I love herons, and especially the Great Egret and Great Blue Heron. This is a composite of the two birds together with various layers of textures and other exposure. The Great Egret is a heron and this one appears to be a juvenile as it lacked the breeding plumage that was evident on other egrets I saw on this day. The Great Blue Heron is one of my all time favorites.

What really attracts me about both of these birds is how different they can look depending on their stance or pose, breeding plumage or not, and the extension of that long neck. The Great Egret can either be the most graceful, or sometimes they look a bit dorky (like this one!). The Great Blue Heron also can look extremely graceful or like a cloaked old sage when its head is tucked in and it is just resting. Though only a few inches taller, the Great Blues tend to be almost twice as heavy as the Great egrets.
