This magnificent painting, with billowy clouds and celestial hues, evokes the essence of heaven. It has always been one of the most popular pieces of the collection and the most requested for prints and reproduction. Because of its size, the original is rarely shown.
The narrative opens with the Apostle John seeing a door in heaven, and hearing a voice like a trumpet summoning him to see things to come. He saw a throne in heaven, and the one on the throne was encircled by an emerald-like rainbow. As he looked upon the throne, it was like a jasper and a sardine stone. Before the throne was a sea of glass like a crystal. Out of the throne proceeded lightning, thunder, and voices. Around the throne were 24 elders wearing white robes and gold crowns. Four beasts each with six wings and with eyes all around encircle the throne. They all gave glory to him that sat on the throne.
