Description
Denali meaning the High One or the Great One from the Inuit Koyukon Athabaskan language was also known as Mt McKinley named after former President William McKinley.
If travelling through this National Park and you hope to see this majestic mountain be aware that because the mountain is so large it creates its own weather systems and oftentimes obscures itself behind clouds. You might have more luck seeing one of the many Grizzlies that roam over 6 million acres.
The park road winds its way 91 miles to Wonder Lake. Around mile 15 will be the first opportunity to see the mountain with subsequent views at various vantage points particularly around mile 60. The Eielson visitor center is located at mile 66. My photograph was taken roughly estimating about 100 miles away from the mountain.
The climbing season lasts about 90 days from sometime in April through July depending on weather conditions. Approximately 1000 people will try to summit and only a fraction of those will make it to the top.
Denali is one of the seven summits the highest mountains on seven continents and in mountaineering is considerd a major accomplishment.
