Beautiful print! The only thing I don’t love is the imprint from the wood at the back of the canvas. Maybe different packaging would help?

Artist's Description

"The Hurricane Express" is the second of three Mascot serials Duke made in the early 1930's. The title refers to a RR locomotive.

Duke's father, in the kiddie matinee aimed film, is an engineer whose train is deliberately crashed by a mysterious man, with an always covered face or mask of another, called "The Wrecker."

Dad dies and Duke spends the remaining chapters vainly discovering the sociopath's identity until the concluding 12th installment.

For his work on the serials Duke was paid $100 a week.

The ubiquitous Charles King has a small part in the film, which I first saw on TV in the mid 1950's in Minneapolis/St.Paul.

"The Wrecker's" identity is revealed in the final, fight filled chapter. He and his crew were after a shipment of gold.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
