So it’s a gift for my dad and haven’t gave it to him yet but we FaceTime and he loved it … I was so worried about ordering here cuz never heard of the company but I’m so glad I did and it came out perfect perfect perfect.

Super happy how print came out, but looks a little less vibrant even after just a cool water quick wash. Still nice looking, but would have preferred the vibrancy to have remained.

Thinking of fairies one day, I got the idea of melding a child with an iris from my garden - to create an iris princess. I let this idea brew in my mind for a year before I figured out how I wanted to proceed. Oddly enough, it all came together when it hit me that just because a petal, or a beard, was in a particular place on a real iris didn't mean it had to be in the same place on my princess. A tiny photo of one of my granddaughters was the basis for this character.
In 2008, Mary Begau Wykes made the decision to pursue her lifelong dream of being an artist. Though she had always had a yearning to paint, prior to that point she had not had the courage to pursue her dream. She had, however, always made a point of including creative pursuits in her life. Other creative activities have included singing, songwriting, playing piano and guitar, quilting, crochet, knitting, macrame and spinning her own yarn. Thinking that she had 'missed the boat' by not pursuing formal education in art, Mary held back on pursuing her dream of painting for many years. Prior to 2008, Mary had had one semester of high school art, and several months of an oil painting class in her late 20's, she continued to hold back until...

Vagabond Folk Art - Virginia Vivier
What is amazing to me, is that you painted this from a tiny black & white photo! The colors are so delicate and perfect for this little Fairy! You are so talented!
Mary Beglau Wykes replied:
Thank you so much, Virginia. I haven't been on this site for SUCH a long time! I wish the comments were dated so I had an idea as to whether or not they were recent! Mary

So cute. Wonderful painting. It is so difficult to paint human faces, get the expression and skin tones right... and you have such a wonderful collection.
Mary Beglau Wykes replied:
I think it is always experience which determines what is most difficult for us. Because I have focused on portraits, I am fairly comfortable working on them - then there are other topics, such as the ocean, and buildings, which seem very difficult to me. Veo que está en España, Weston. Me gustaría mucho viajar a España un día.

Thank you Beverly . . . thought about the concept for about a year before I attempted it. The turning point was when I realized that I could take elements of the iris, and do whatever I wanted to with them. Now I'm hoping to do a Redbud princess soon, using my other granddaughter as my model. She LOVED redbuds when she was little . . . and used to make up songs about purple trees.
