Description
I lived at the Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey Bay, CA, for 5 weeks while my husband was attending classes. We lived in Henderson Hall (the old Del Monte Hotel). I spent those weeks touring around the area on foot, driving and taking photos. As a natural American icon, The Lone Cypress Tree, really inspired me and I wanted to do something contemporary that could be a timeless image appreciated by all. For those unfamiliar with Monterey and the 17 Mile Drive, it was the place where Robert Louis Stevenson lived and wrote many of his classics. It also goes along the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, and connects the Big Sur coast of California and Carmel, to Monterey Bay. Looking across the bay to the north you see the foggy coastal tree packed mountains of Santa Cruz. If you ever have the chance to tour this wild and beautiful area, please do so, you will surely come away inspired! What you see in the painting are salt bleached rocks in the bay, choppy waves, the Santa Cruz coastline across to the north, and a rock wall that was built to support the eroding fragile rocky point that juts out from the coast and cradles this lonely sea-battered tree, a symbol of solidarity, strength and courage.
