The first card of the Major Arcana, this marks the point where my artistic journey through the Tarot comes full circle. When I first started painting Tarot cards in 2013, I intended to base my deck on a medieval one, and so chose to use the image of The Juggler for my original first card. My deck was to be based on the theme of the four elements, with the suit of Wands corresponding to Fire, and my Juggler was juggling with fiery wands, which provided the name of the deck: the Fiery Wands Tarot. But then I embarked on a variation where Wands meant Air, and started producing illustrated pip cards based on the images of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. By the time that the Airy Wands Tarot was reaching completion, it seemed clear that my fiery juggler did not belong in the same deck. I decided to create an airy magician to bring my Tarot series to its conclusion. So here the magician rises like a transparent phantom above the blue mountains, with his magical symbols floating around him in the wind.
