I was interested in creating a certain mystery in this photo. I was thinking of the science fiction movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I wanted to be looking up at this giant monolith. I used a simple piece of lumber 8 ½” long set on a white card. I positioned a black card in the back as a background. The lighting is what gives this photograph the drama.
For lighting I used cross lighting with simple desk lamps placed in back of the subject or at 120 degrees from the camera and low to give high contrast lighting. I also used a low camera angle for drama. This photo was shot with a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8 macro lens with an exposure of 1/60 sec at f/16 at an ISO of 3200.
In Photoshop I converted this photo to black and white and composited a second photo as a background which was a star field that I had photographed in northern Minnesota. The star field was also converted to black and white and I used blending masks in Photoshop to create this photo out of two images. The star field was also photographed with my Nikon D90 at ISO 3200 but with a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-f/4.5 zoom lens. The exposure of the star field was 30 seconds at f/3.5.
