Elephant Head, is a prominent 5,607' natural landmark, in the Santa Cruz Valley, just south of Tucson, Arizona (USA).
This massive granite craggy monolith, sweeps majestically skyward at the western end of the Santa Rita Mountains. It thrusts its head west of the better-known, Mount Hopkins and Mount Wrightson.The summit seems suspended, on this wintery day, especially with the sun peeking out of the cloud-filled sky, lighting up this famous landmark. You can see the peak from certain vantages in western Tucson (like Saguaro National Park), and from Interstate 19 south of Tucson.
While returning from an art show that we had the privilege to be a part of, I just couldn't resist photographing this beauty of Arizona's scenic landscape. Exiting the Interstate 19, we traveled down Elephant Head Road, to get an up-close view, of this enormous chunk of rock "The Mystique Of Elephant Head!"
Interesting enough, at the top of the summit, is the โElephant Shrine,โ a collection of miniature elephants left by hikers and climbers.

Janet, what a beautiful capture of the Elephant Head, part of the woefully underrated Santa Rita Mountains of Southern Arizona. You have really captured the scenery so well here. I am not sure the Santa Rita Mountains are underrated too much, as a lot of hiking and camping goes on in her beauty. This is one hike I would like to try to do. Will have to attempt it in cooler weather though. I just think many people do not appreciate the beauty around them. Having a mindset that the desert is dirt, brown and ugly. When I am photographing the phenomenal sunsets and cloudscapes, especially along Colossal Cave Rd., no one is stopping to notice. I do need to make a point of driving along here when itโs green. Something I want to do when the monsoon rains are really cooking. I appreciate your wonderful words expressed about this. I finally got them uploaded from January, after just visiting Cave Creek in Portal, Arizona the day before. The lighting on Elephant Head, really made it a standout. So glad we took the frontage road to Elephant Head Rd. so that we could see it from this vantage, rather than just from the Interstate highway.
