Description
The Oculus is the main station house of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The station has five tracks and four platforms in the middle of a turning loop that trains from New Jersey use to turn around and head back to NJ. It was designed to connect various modes of transportation in Lower Manhattan including the Fulton Station in the east and the Battery Park City Ferry Terminal in the west. The Westfield World Trade Center mall is also within the Oculus building. The Oculus has been controversial due to its high cost, $4 billion, and extended delays. It is a glass and steel structure designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, to look “like a dove in flight” with white ribs that interlock high above ground.
