The Protected represents a balanced root chakra. The woman lays peacefully against the earth holding a white flag. She is represented as surrendering to the comfortable peace of her land with the energy of her world ancestors encompassing her safety. Her energy is drawn inwards to the center and she is governed by gravity and new beginnings.

The guiding principals behind both The Protected and the balance of the first chakra, or Muladhara in Sanskrit, are the element of earth and the force of gravity. The first Chakra is located in and around our legs, its color is red, it's vibrations are slow and survival is it's goal. A figure lays awakened renewed from the underworld, has all she needs for survival and holds the white flag of peace.

Shelley's paintings dance with unabashed honesty of the medicines and challenges of the human life cycle. Existential and contemplative, her work explores the net between psychology and spirituality. She discovers what each painting wants to say, translates it and offers her paintings as meditations on existence. She uses shamanic journeying and energetic healing to pull the physical feelings inside of her out and onto the canvas.
