A few years ago I was asked to do a painting for our church's Christmas Eve service on why Jesus came to earth. I was familiar with the phrase, "Jesus is the reason for the season", and even though I agree with that phrase I thought it had become a little trite. I wanted to depict a new way for people to think about the baby Jesus at Christmas time. When we sing "O, come let us adore Him" I wanted people to think not only of the cute little baby in the manger, but the reason he came... to hang on a cross to take away my sins and yours. Through this act we are now able to be 'right' with God again. By adding the crown of thorns into a typical 'Madonna and Child' my goal was to foreshadow the "good news" of Easter.
