This painting makes me happy!! The colors are really fun and, like his other pieces I own, expertly painted. I want to live in this cottage and walk into the ocean. Ordered it on canvas - well executed. Thank you for the smiles!

Artist's Description
My painting shows the moment when, on the 23rd January 1854 in squally weather, veteran captain Asa Eldridge of Yarmouth, Cape Cod, sailed the clipper ship the Red Jacket into the mouth of the River Mersey in Liverpool. In doing so he was about to set a record journey time of 13 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes (dock to dock) from New York to Liverpool. It remains unbeaten to this day for this class of sailing vessel. From the position shown in the picture, he had only some 3 miles left to go as he urged the ship onwards to dock at the area known as the "Pier Head". This was the ship's maiden voyage and was to be the only time she flew the "Stars and Stripes". Sadly, she never returned to USA. This remarkable achievement was witnessed by huge crowds of people lining the banks of the river Mersey following a tip off from the crew of a steamship which had recently docked at Liverpool. It was made all the more noteworthy due to the fact that the voyage was made in appalling weather and with a...
About Anthony Lyon
Hello and welcome to my gallery. I have always enjoyed art but especially the disciplines of sketching and painting. The most influential period of my life was the time shared with my children when they were very young. I recall the happy hours spent with them drawing and painting pictures and telling stories. Children have a wonderful ability to combine these activities in a unique and magical way. This experience taught me that paintings which can produce a good story have a very special appeal. So, if children can make a story from a picture, why not everyone else? Whilst this aspect of my art is a primary consideration I also try to produce paintings with a degree of realism in them but add an element of fantasy. The latter, I...

Anthony Lyon replied:
Amy, many thanks for your kind comments.

Those waves look a bit on the choppy side to me Anthony. Makes me happy I am not out there! Well done ( revisit) I thin I have seen everything!
Anthony Lyon replied:
Thanks for coming back to view this painting Reynold and for your kind comments and observations. In all the years that I have visited this section of the River Mersey in Liverpool, I have never seen it in a calm state. It is always 'lively,' which is just one of the reasons why it is so difficult to navigate and why it is compulsory to have a qualified Mersey pilot on board ship when it enters the port.
Callan Percy

Well now!!!! I am with Dave on this gem. Lots of research and work and now this gorgeous painting--AND WHAT A WONDERFUL WORK OF ART IT IS!!!!!!!!!! This competes with your very best ..... AND .... It is my absolute favorite work of art ever in your gallery, Anthony.Beautiful and lovely as can be. FAV
Anthony Lyon replied:
Many, many thanks to you Reynold for your kind and supportive comments. I'm really pleased you like the painting. I hope the picture brings into focus the wonderful record breaking achievement of Captain Eldridge when he sailed this beautiful ship into Liverpool. For some strange reason this story and the rest of the Red Jacket's history seem to have been largely forgotten. I never realised just how difficult the research on this ship would be - so much misinformation along the way. However, I'm glad I persevered and finally dug out the facts.
Dave Farrow
Anthony, it`s quite obvious you put a lot of time and research into this beautiful painting, it certainly reflects my friend. Again I say, very well done.
Anthony Lyon replied:
Again, many thanks for your kind remarks and support Dave.

Well done my friend, extremely well done. The detail you have painted is incredible and the colors are simply beautiful. You are a true master of the brush and winner of the prestigious "Sailors for the Arts" gold cup. l.v.f. Another dazzler Anthony. I truly enjoy seeing your art
Anthony Lyon replied:
Dave, to receive such an accolade from you has truly made my day! I'm really pleased you like it so much. I can tell you it has been a very long and difficult task. It's taken some 5 years research overall and 4 attempts at painting the scene to do justice to this beautiful ship and its remarkable captain.
