Description
The Sagres was built in 1937 in shipyard of Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and named the Albert Leo Schlageter. She was the 3rd of four ships built by the German Navy including the Horst Vessel (now the US Coast Guard ship, Eagle). and the Gorch Fock (now the Tovarishch of Ukraine). A sister-ship, Mircea, was also built for the Romanian Navy. During World War II she was taken to Bremerhaven shipyard after damage from a mine and captured by the U.S. forces in 1945. The ship was given to Brazil in 1948 and sailed in as a training ship in the Brazilian Navy under the name Guanabara. In 1962 she was purchased by Portugal purchased to replace the old sail training ship Sagres and is often referred to as the Sagres II.
Docked in Greenport, Long Island, NY.

Looks like a tall ship seen in SW Spain a few decades ago. There were like 15 of these huge tall ship berthed and impossible to see them all. Thanks for the memories!!
Deborah A Andreas replied:
Thank you for stopping by again, Tony! Yes, beautiful Tall ships sail the world and one feels blessed when they stop in at a harbor near you!

Hopefully next year's visit by the Tall Ships will be a little closer to us - perhaps Port Washington!

Hi Deborah! We got there late - about 4.30, and stayed until about 8.00. Stopped for lunch and then visited a winery before going to Greenport. Had a great day!

Fantastic image, Deborah! The Tall Ships are truly magnificent! Glad I was also at Greenport to enjoy their visit! F/L.
Deborah A Andreas replied:
Hi Dora! Thank you so much! It was very crowded when we got there at 1:00 pm. We stayed till about 4;30. I took quite a few pics. Even of the crowds. I'm going to look for you now in my pics! LOL

WOW... that is one amazing ship Deb.... Did you get a tour of it? ;-) FV
Deborah A Andreas replied:
Thank you so much, Nick! No, we decided not to go on the ships this year. They wanted $20 each, to go on the ships and to just walk on the dock in which the ships were docked. So I walked all around and took different shots from different areas. I will post more soon. :-)

Wow, this is one tall ship on her historic voyage... Excellent clarity in this exceptional photo, Deborah! This panoramic view dramatically puts into perspective the immense scale of this majestic vessel compared to the people and nearby boats. Thank you for sharing this beautiful image with fellow artists and prospective clients, especially those who love ships! L/F
Deborah A Andreas replied:
Thank you so much, Brian! You sure have a keen eye! These Tall ships were quite the sight to behold!

Deborah A Andreas replied:
Thank you so much, Jerry. This is one of 6 Tall ships in Greenport harbor since July 4th. They set sail today at 6:00. Wish I could have been there today to see them leave, but I worked, and Greenport is an hour drive away from me.
