The Great Smoky Mountains is a mountain range and a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains. America's most visited national park, the Park is world renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture. It contains the largest stand of old forest growth east of the Mississippi River. The name "Smoky" comes from the natural fog that often hangs over the range and appears to be large smoke plumes from a distance. This fog is caused by the vegetation exhaling volatile organic compounds, chemicals that have a high vapor pressure and easily form vapors at normal temperature and pressure.
