A pastel executed on Wallis paper of a stone walled path during a plein air outing in the Columbia Gorge. Columbia Gorge is located just east of Portland, Oregon. The momentary sweep of bright sunlight caught my eye and I immediately dropped my plein air painting equipment and snapped a quick digital shot. As photos do not always capture the moment, memory of the event filled in the blanks.
Born in Philadelphia in the late thirties, Jim Gola grew up heavily influenced by art and the cultural atmosphere contained in this bustling city. The city of brotherly love is still a thriving east coast art market that comprises some of the oldest art schools and galleries in America. Jim admits to spending numerous hours at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a youngster. Admiring much of the work of Americas past masters such as Inness, Moran, Chase, Homer and Bierstadt, among others. He then started to generate his lifelong love of oil painting. Curt..you got that right. What caught my eye was the light at the end of the tunnel. That pic sold at the Annual Oak Tree Art Show in Woodland. I am kind of sorry I let that one go as it was only the second pastel painting I did.
