This is the iconic view of the Incan site of Machu Picchu. I chose to process this photograph in black and white in order to highlight the incredible stonework. Color photos of Machu Picchu are often so lush and dramatic that it is easy to overlook the details of the Incan walls. I was in awe of the drystone construction (no mortar!), and the range in stonework styles in different parts of the site. As a geologist, I was also amazed that more than five centuries of earthquakes have done little to damage many of the walls. We could learn some lessons from the Incas with respect to modern building techniques!
