While in Corpus Christi, Texas I was able to tour the USS Lexington. Aboard the Lexington, there were many old fighter planes. This one especially caught my eye, not because it was named "The Texan", but because the propeller and the plane's colors were so eye catching!

The Texan was the Navy's advanced trainer aircraft from 1936 through the 1940s and a primary trainer in the 1950s. It is generally considered the most successful training aircraft ever designed and was used extensively by the Navy.

The Navy's SNJ featured a provision for armament and many were eventually fitted with tail hooks for carrier landing training. Over 16,000 examples of the same basic design were produced. Lexington's SNJ Texan was on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation at Penscola, FL.
