Inexpensive prints of this historic era are available here. The original painting and the two companion "esplanade" paintings are in the upstairs art gallery of the Scioto County Community Action Organization in Portsmouth Ohio.. Did you know this can be purchased as a shower curtain? or a bed cover? As a companion piece to "The Rush Hour Portsmouth Ohio 1948" and "The Post Office 1948", I turn the opposite direction from my imaginary view point over the esplanade and paint the three theaters in one block. This is the way it was in 1948 in Portsmouth Ohio. The war was over and people were buying cars, yet city buses and taxis were the primary source of transportation.
Frank L. Hunter... Portsmouth Ohio... the world to Tampa Florida What you see on this site is my "arto-biography".. Almost all illustrations in these galleries tell the story of my life. That is what an illustration does. On these sites you will find my birthplace, my travels, my loves and my friends. After more than fifty years in the advertising art business (or commercial art, as it was once called), I retired in 2007 and commenced to assemble past works and illustrate my life. I am a native of Portsmouth Ohio, and one of my galleries on this site is devoted to that city. I can honestly say that in each of my works, "I was there". I received fine art training at Ohio State University and then went to work for a major advertising art...

Thanks Frank. I've been using gouache exclusively for 30 years now and am just beginning to flirt with the idea of acrylics, pencil, and pastel. The work I'm seeing on FAA is really inspiring me to broaden my horizons.

Makes me joyful Frank.
Frank Hunter replied:
Thanks John. Your work is fantastic. I note you too love opague water color. In 1959 fresh out of OSU school of fine art I was working for a 35-man art studio servicing Midwest accounts. Our top illustrator died and I purchased his sets of Maribu colors. 1 opague water color, 1 set of greys and 1 set of water color. I was already using caseins and whatever so after adding those to my materials.... the interesting thing is after some 300 or who knows paintings using all those, I STILL USE THEM! They go a long way and I hardly ever buy brushes. I do use acrylics that are hard on them but not as bad as oils. Keep up what you do.
