Looking out from the top of the Tel Tajo canyon upon which the city of Ronda perches, one gets a glimpse of the beautiful countryside with its meadows and mountains, fields and olive groves. While the valley is warm with gentle breezes, it is not unusual for a chill wind to be blowing through the city.
Ronda has been home to people since the neolithic age, but was first settled by Celts in in the 6th century BC, called it Arunda. Others came after: the Phoenicians, the Romans, The Suebi, the Visigoths and the Arabs, who named it Izn-Rand Onda ("city of the castle") and made it the capital of the Takurunna province.
Ronda was a favorite summer place for writers Ernest Hemingway and Orson Wells who resided in the old town quarter called La Ciudad. German poet Rainer Maria Rilke spent extended periods in Ronda. There he kept a permanent room at the Hotel Reina Victoria (built in 1906) where his room remains to this day as he left it, a mini-museum of Rilkeana.
As a designer, I try to find the little twist that sparks a connection, a wave of delight. When not otherwise occupied with developing brands, logos, packaging and trade show displays, I travel with my artist husband in search of inspiration. Many of the photos are from my home state of Wisconsin and from Spain and Peru. Wherever we go, the camera is in my hand, capturing the little things that inspire awe or make me smile. And because I love to tinker, I often play in Photoshop to create unique results.
