The Weight of the World
A band stallion has the responsibility of protecting the other horses in his band from predators and danger of any sort. If he senses danger, he will put himself between his band and the source of danger. In addition, he needs to fend off attempts from other stallions to steal his band. In a wild horse herd, you can see the marks of struggle on a stallion's coat. The older he is, the more scars there will be. Eventually, he will lose the battle, and another stallion will take over his herd. It is a hard life, but of course it does have its perks, in the affection and respect shown to him from his band and the fact that his genes are passed on through his descendants.
